Company Profile: Engineering overhaul and repair company with 375 staff.

Issue: Generous company sick pay scheme, accompanied by an historical culture of “a right to sick pay as additional holidays” led to a company-wide absence problem.

The average absence of 12 days absence per person per annum was costing the business around £346,500 per year.

Solution: Agreed a clear absence management procedure - including return-to-work interviews, occupational health referrals and introduction of a disciplinary procedure trigger following a third absence.

Also created an attendance bonus for staff to encourage attendance.

Saving: Since the new absence policies were introduced absence dropped from 12 to 2.5 days per person over a 24-month period saving around £290,400 per year.
